Closing Reception Sunday September 22nd 4-6pm
ANTHOLOGIA (ἀνθολογία or flower-gathering) is a durational exhibition by sTo Len that will grow over the course of 6 months and respond to the seasonal transformations occurring while he is embedded in the Queens Botanical Garden. Len’s process of “gathering flowers” begins by spending time on the 39 acre site and learning from both the plants and the staff who care for them. Inspired by a class he attended in the Education Department, Len is working on a series of photographic prints called anthotypes that are created with photosensitive pigments extracted from plants and flowers in the garden as they come into bloom. Using both the QBG historical archive and his own photographs, Len’s images mirror the ephemeral quality inherent in nature as well as the distortion of our collective memory by putting together a non-linear timeline awash in chlorophyll soaked papers, degenerated photocopies, and other types of imperfect imprints. New works will continually be added as others may decay and fade away, culminating with a closing public reception on September 22nd that coincides with the Autumnal Equinox.

New York-based interdisciplinary artist sTo Len returns to his hometown of Alexandria,VA to present an on-going exhibition of work created as the first artist in residence at AlexRenew Wastewater Treatment Facility. During his 18 month residency, Sto has created a series of works that uses Alexandria’s water and its renewal as his subject and sometimes even his medium. As a printmaker, Len collects the imprints of the world around us, from the natural patterns in water to the abstract shapes of trash that he picked up along the Potomac River. Employing traditional analog print techniques such as suminagashi, gyotaku, and cyanotype as well as photography, sTo Len updates these methods by using local water, pollution, bacteria and waste as print materials. This repurposed visual language documents our relationship to water and begins to unpack the environmental impact of humans on the natural world by revealing what often goes unseen or ignored. The exhibition will continually evolve throughout the duration of the show with workshops, an online water-themed radio show, and opportunities for audience participation and virtual engagement.
